One of the Spirits Burning isn’t your standard memoir.
Don Falcone is a musician who’s long running music project, Spirits Burning, has contributors from all over the world and is more of a collective than just a standard band.
The book goes back and forth in time.
Some parts read like a studio notebook. Others like pages from a person’s life long journal.
It’s more the memoir of a musical conception than it is a person, yet since that music is part of the definition of Don Falcone as a being, it is in a sense his life’s memoir, albeit a very different view into his being.
For those who ever thought “gee let’s start a band” this is essential reading.
Don breaks down all the challenges and joys that go along with being in a band.
He talks about record deals, the recording process, rehearsals, etc. all of the behind the scenes things that are a big part of the musical circus that goes on around a band.
There are comments and thoughts on Spirits Burning from many of the contributors to the music including; Michael Moorcock, Eric Bloom, Deb Angelosanto (of Astro Al), and many more.
If you’re a real music fan, read this book.
If you’re a Blue Oyster Cult fan, this book is a must.
If you’re a fan of Michael Moorcock this is your next must read.
If you’re a Hawkwind fan, considering how many people from that band recorded with Don and have comments in the book, it’s more than well worth the read!
This is my favorite book of 2025 so far.
